The Diocese of Stockton was thrilled to welcome author and theologian Brett Salkeld as the keynote speaker for this year’s Back-to-School Inservice, presenting to over 300 of our educators on “Making Every Class Catholic.” Brett delivered an inspiring reminder that our Catholic identity can (and should!) permeate every aspect of our Catholic schools. Catholic education looks beyond preparing students for graduation, college, successful careers, and productivity (all great things!). “Every education presumes an anthropology,” he says, and if our vision is limited to those achievements, we are essentially priming them for the rat race. Our schools aim higher: to form hearts and minds for heaven by instilling “a Christian vision of the world, of life, of culture, and history.” Whether teaching theology, math, science, or art; coaching; serving as an administrator; maintaining our facilities; or supporting our schools in countless other ways, each of us has a role in helping students discover not only what they are learning, but what they are made for.

Parishes throughout the Diocese of Stockton are wrapping up registration for CYO Fall Sports. Families interested in participating are encouraged to contact their Parish Athletic Director as soon as possible for details about their parish’s registration process, team availability, and registration deadline.

With great pleasure, we share that 57 students from Saint Mary's High School and Central Catholic have been fully initiated into the Catholic Church this year. After at least 8 months of active preparation, they have been sealed with the gifts of the Holy Spirit. At the Easter Vigil, 6 Catechumen from Saint Mary’s and 13 from Central received all three Sacraments of initiation at the Easter Vigil. On May 7, at a joint celebration for which both communities together, the remaining 38 young men and women were brought into full communion with the Church.

On April 21, 5th and 6th graders from ten elementary schools across the Diocese of Stockton put their Catholic knowledge to the test at the annual Religion Decathlon, proudly hosted by St. Stanislaus Catholic School. For third-grade students at Annunciation Catholic School, science came to life as they spent several weeks caring for salmon eggs until they hatched. A representative from Delta Fly Fishers—an organization that partners with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife and is dedicated to the art of fly fishing with an emphasis on conservation—delivered the eggs directly to the classroom. Students from St. Luke Catholic School and St. Anthony Catholic School had the opportunity to unite with Catholics from all over the state at the inaugural "Catholics at the Capitol" on March 25. This gathering was hosted by the California Catholic Conference, which works on behalf of the Bishops of California to advance Catholic Social Teaching in state law. Click to read more...

Students at St. Bernard Catholic School are surrounded by stories and images of the Saints throughout the year. Through classroom lessons, prayer, artwork and seasonal events, these holy men and women show students what it looks like to follow Christ. On All Saints Day, third graders bring these stories to life by researching and presenting on a Saint that inspires them– sharing details about their life, virtue, and legacy. Through this tradition, students grow in their understanding and relationship to the Saints, encouraged to believe that sainthood is obtainable for all, and inspired to live out the same courage and compassion in their own unique way.
