On the Feast of the Annunciation, students from St. Luke Catholic School and St. Anthony Catholic School had the opportunity to unite with Catholics from all over the state at the inaugural "Catholics at the Capitol." This gathering was hosted by the California Catholic Conference, which works on behalf of the Bishops of California to advance Catholic Social Teaching in state law.
"The California Catholic Conference (CCC) is the official public policy voice of the Catholic Church in California. We advocate with policy makers and the public to advance the Catholic vision of human life and dignity, to enhance the honorable and good in society, and to uplift those who are poor and vulnerable. We offer education to Catholics and the general public. We empower Catholics to put their faith into action consistent with Catholic teaching."
Several bishops and CCC representatives spoke to a crowd of lay and religious of all ages about the focus of their advocacy and the work being done in support of the most vulnerable. They also reminded those present of our duty to be civically engaged while remaining committed to prayer.
"We must not just cross our arms and wait. We must take our place in history and respond with courage and intentionality with significant actions." Bishop Ramon Bejarano exclaimed that even if our government has stepped back from its commitments to supporting the poor and protecting the environment, we, "as conscious and responsible citizens," must not abandon them.
After hearing from leaders and worshiping through song, participants took to the streets. With rosaries in hand, they walked around the Capitol, praying together for California and its leaders. The procession ended back inside the Cathedral with the celebration of Mass. While the day ended for some, others had the opportunity to enter the Capitol and visit legislative offices.
Our presence was a powerful sign of unity and hope, grounded in prayer and love of neighbor.
