Understanding GenderUnderstandings of gender continually evolve. In the course of a person’s life, the interests, activities, clothing and professions that are considered the domain of one gender or another evolve in ways both small and large. However, as Pope Francis cautions, "It needs to be emphasized that 'biological sex and the socio-cultural role of sex (gender) can be distinguished but not separated.'" (Pope Francis. Amoris Laetitia 56).
Bishop Myron Cotta encourages a compassionate response to all matters related to gender. He exhorts that all ministry in the Diocese of Stockton be well informed by magisterial teaching and pastoral experience.
